Liz Cheney: Past Politician or Future President?

Liz Cheney has made headlines recently for her outspokenness against former President Donald Trump, a member of her party, during the January 6th Committee hearings. Cheney was one of the few Congressional Republicans to actively speak out against Trump, who many consider the face of the Republican Party, and received backlash from her party because of it. The hearings weren’t the first time she distanced herself from Trump– she was also one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach him. Because of her infractions, Cheney was removed from her House Republican Conference chair spot and was no longer recognized by her state’s Republican Party. Although Cheney lost her bid for re-election, she has her sights set on an even higher position than the House of Representatives: the Presidency. She has hinted at a possible campaign in 2024, but is yet to confirm or deny her intent to run. Cheney has said that if she were to run, it’s likely that she wouldn’t be running under the Republican Party.

    Liberal Political Commentary

The January 6th trials have illuminated a lot of the political landscape of our country and where the two parties stand. From the beginning, (now former) Congresswoman Liz Cheney has bravely put country over party— and she lost her reelection campaign because of it. The attack on the Capitol was harrowing, and thanks to Cheney’s testimonies it is far more likely that Trump and others responsible will face consequences for his actions regarding the event. The fact that people on both sides of the aisle mourned Cheney’s loss is a symbol of her honor, and a small sign of hope that polarization will eventually pass.As far as a possible bid for the Presidency goes, it’s safe to say that many will be watching carefully. Cheney represents something that many have thought long dead: someone whose ties to their duty are stronger than their ties to party funds. It would be a breath of fresh air to have someone like her in the highest position in our government.

    Conservative Political Commentary

It seems that ex-president Trump has a growing thorn in his side named Liz Cheney. Liz Cheney is an accused RINO, Republican in Name Only, according to One American News, and has publicly stated her opposition to Trump. Recently Cheney lost her position as a congress woman in Wyoming. She lost the campaign by 38% which is a clear and distinct message from the people of Wyoming. This is likely due to her public opposition to the Trump campaign.

According to the Guardian Cheney is quoted as saying ““Donald Trump has betrayed Republican voters. He’s lied to them. Those who support him have lied to them and they’re using people’s patriotism against them,”. She is strongly opposed to Trump winning a second term and is also quoted as saying ““I think that defeating [Trump] is going to require a broad, united front of Republicans, Democrats and independents.”(Astor).

Cheney has even gone so far as to start a political action committee that will allegedly educate Americans about threats to our democracy as well as oppose any bid by Trump for the White house. Given the significant loss Cheney recently experienced it is unlikely this committee will be largely successful. However, the minority number of republicans that support Cheney have led her to believe in the idea of running for president in the 2024 election. Doing so could potentially split the votes of some democrats and republicans that respect and like Cheney. In the end it seems this would be a losing attempt for the presidential office and instead a cheap shot at Trump.

The old Republican Party is gone. The days of “let’s just get along” are behind us as we have now entered the era of radical partisan loyalty. The old Republican Party died with Liz Cheney— the party that put country and justice above all else, and its killer is none other than the Trump faction that infected the entirety of the Republican Party. It’s true that parties change over time, and it’s certainly fair to say that the last two years mark a shift in Republicans as a whole farther to the right. Leaders of the Republican Party opted to defend a former President who incited a riot over encouraging one of their own to tell the truth.Although I would be interested to see how Cheney’s run for President would go, it would be nearly impossible for her to win for two reasons: she’s still a conservative and the system is rigged against 3rd parties. While Cheney has diverted from her party recently, she voted with Trump nearly every single bill during his time in office. She opposed social and institutional reforms, and voters will remember that. The way that the US administers Presidential Elections almost ensures that someone running outside of the two major parties will never win, so unless she’s somehow able to secure either of their nominations her campaign is dead in the water.

Cheney is making a ruckus. She is a niche congresswoman with a limited number of supporters who is attempting to overturn the status quo. This will not work in the long run and merely irritate MAGA supporters. This is proven through the significant loss that Cheney recently experienced in Wyoming causing her to lose her position in congress due to her opposition to ex-president Trump. The new political action committee she has created seems little more than a desperate attempt by a desperate congresswoman to stay relevant and in power. It is unlikely this committee will make a huge difference in the thinking of most republicans. It is more likely that the committee along with Cheney’s bid for the presidency, will result in her future loss. Cheney simply does not have enough power to go against Trump and his followers who remain loyal to a fault. The best political action for Cheney was pointed out in an article by CNN that suggested she join the Biden administration instead. Many republican outlets have referred to Cheney as a RINO and doing this would prove it true; however, it also may keep her politically relevant.
